Lankford and Associates, Inc. and Phelps Development, LLC as joint developers have entered into an agreement with the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine ("SCRM") for the development of a 144,000 sq. ft. facility and laboratory for stem cell research to be built adjacent to the University of California at San Diego ("UCSD") campus in Torrey Pines, California. The members of the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine are UCSD, the Burnham Institute, the Salk Institute and Scripps Institute. This consortium was formed to submit a grant application to the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine ("CIRM"), which has been established by the State of California to issue and administer the $3 billion which has been appropriated by the State of California for stem cell research.
The SCRM facility will be a stem cell "collaboratory", in which scientists from member institutions work in focused teams addressing critical health issues using cutting edge science and technology. The facility will be LEED Gold Certified.
The SCRM facility will encourage the expansion of extant groups and the formation of new collaborations between multi-disciplinary scientists. The facility will house core services of quality and scope more substantial than could be supported by any member alone. These cores will provide access to animal models of disease, advanced imaging, state-of-the-art robotics, and protein and nucleic acid analysis facilities. The SCRM facility will also include state-of-the-art, cyber-linked education and conference facilities.
